Living as Disciples: “How We Live Matters” recap

Pastor Dustin Leek   -

Yesterday’s sermon from Luke 6:27-49, delivered powerful insights into the life of discipleship. As we reflect on the message we heard, it’s crucial to ask ourselves: What do we do with what we heard yesterday? Let’s dive into some practical applications gleaned from this impactful sermon.

  1. Living a Life of Love: Jesus’s call to love our enemies, bless those who curse us, do good to those who hate us, and pray for those who mistreat us goes against our natural inclinations. But as disciples of Christ, we’re called to embody agape love—the selfless, sacrificial love that God extends to us. This love isn’t based on feelings but on a determined act of the will, reflecting Christ’s love for us. Practical application involves consciously choosing love in our interactions, even with those who oppose us.
  2. Living a Life of Integrity: Hypocrisy has no place in the life of a disciple. We’re urged not to judge unfairly but to examine ourselves first before pointing out faults in others. Integrity entails treating others with fairness, humility, and grace, aligning our actions with the teachings of Christ. We must guard against hypocritical judgment and strive for consistency between our beliefs and our behavior.
  3. Living a Life of Fruitfulness: Our words and actions reveal what’s stored up in our hearts. As disciples, we’re called to bear good fruit, reflecting the character of Christ. This means monitoring our thoughts, words, and deeds, ensuring they align with the teachings of Jesus. By cultivating a heart filled with love, grace, and truth, we can positively impact those around us and glorify God through our lives.
  4. Living a Life of Obedience: Mere profession of faith isn’t enough; true discipleship involves obedience to Christ’s commands. We’re called to listen to His words and put them into practice, building our lives on the solid foundation of His teachings. Obedience requires surrendering our will to God’s and aligning our actions with His will. Regular spiritual sharpening—through prayer, study of God’s Word, and fellowship with other believers—keeps us grounded in our faith and strengthens our commitment to following Jesus.

Living as disciples of Christ entails intentional choices and daily commitments. Our lives should reflect the transformative power of God’s love, the consistency of our character, the abundance of good fruit, and the obedience to Christ’s teachings. As we navigate each day, let’s strive to embody these principles, remembering that our lives are a testament to the grace and truth found in Jesus Christ.

May we be empowered by the Holy Spirit to live out our faith authentically and effectively, shining as lights in a dark world and pointing others to the love and salvation found in Christ alone.
